             INTERPRETATI          ON ORDINANCE (CHAPTER 89)
             MerchantShipping (Special Exercise of British Consular
                            Officers Powers) Order, 1961

                         Commencement : 25th November, 1961
      In exercise of the powers conferred by section 22 of the Interpretation.
     Ordinance and of all other powers in that behalf him thereto enabling  in
     respect of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1894 of the United Kingdom in its
     application to the Federation of Nigeria, the Governor-General, acting in
     accordance with the advice of the Council of Ministers, has madethe follow-
     ing Order—                        :

      1, This Order may be cited as the Merchant Shipping (Special Exercise            Citation
   of British Consular Officers Powers) Order, 1961, and shall be read as one          and
_ with and form part of the Order in Council providing for the exercise in             application.
 _ the Southern Nigeria Protectorate of the powers of a British Consular
   Officer under the Merchant Shipping Act, 1894, and issued on the 25th day of
     January, 1908, as 1908, No. 62 (hereinafter called the Order in Council).
 _     2, The Order in Council is amended by the insertion after the word              Order in
     “done” where it last occurs in the text published in Volume XI of the Laws        Council
     of the Federation of Nigeria and Lagos, 1958, at page 324, of the words           amended.
     “, unless the Federal Minister charged with responsibility for matters relat-
     ing to Merchant Shipping by notice in the Gazette in respect of any Port or
     place otherwise directs’.

                                 EXPLANATORY Note
                  (This ts not partof the Order but explains its effect)
   In any port or place outside Lagos the Senior Officer of Customsis the
 person at present authorised to exercise sundry power under the Merchant
 Shipping Act, 1894, The purpose: of this Order is to enable the Minister
 to direct that some person other than the Senior Customs Officer mayexercise
 those powers elsewhere in Nigeria.
